If you decide to buy sheets rather than make your own softener, try this tip.  You'll still save!

I have read many different ways to save on dryer sheets (reuse, use washrags sprayed with liquid fabric softner, etc) but what I find works best for us (and still keeps the static cling away) is to simply have John cut them (with some tool in the garage!) in half as soon as we get them home. Twice the sheets for the same price and same end result!
